Déjà vu - do we learn from our mistakes?

So, another new year, another lockdown. Although we knew it should happen, I'm not sure we really saw this coming.

In lots of ways, I feel like this is easier than the very first lockdown, but at the same time, there is something more frightening about it. Lockdown one felt like fear of the unknown, whereas this one feels scary because we know so much more.

My mum says that because this is nothing new, I should be better equipped to deal with it: "you've done it before, so this time it should be easier" and this is what made me think about whether we do actually "learn from our mistakes".

I suppose the idea is, that if you made the mistake once, when the situation happens again, you learn not to repeat those mistakes. I'm not sure about that, because in lockdown #3, I'm already sleeping in late, behind on my school work, stuffing my face with ALL the food and spending far too much time on my socials.

The difference this time is, that I'm managing not to feel so guilty about it and understanding that some of this is stuff I need to do to keep sane. I'm also talking to my teachers about the work and letting them know that I might not be absolutely on top of it all.

What I'm trying to say is, that yes, my mum is right (and you won't hear me say that very often), but that maybe she's not right in the way she thinks she is. We do learn from our mistakes, but perhaps what we learn is not to never make those mistakes again, but how to cope better with them when we do make them.
