The Personal Development Curriculum

Our personal development curriculum aims for pupils to develop their learning, understanding, attributes and skills so they can become safe, healthy, happy and responsible global citizens both now, and in their future roles within a global community.

The curriculum provides a balanced and broad-based approach which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of students. It focuses on equality, diversity and inclusion whilst also highlighting and emphasising fundamental British values whilst also highlighting areas which are contrary to these. Through the delivered content, there is a regular focus on mental and physical health and safety, whilst also considering these within the on-line and physical worlds. The personal development curriculum prepares students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life beyond school.

The curriculum is primarily delivered to students through form tutors; they know their students well and deliver the content to their tutees competently and with care and sensitivity. Tutors receive training as appropriate and also an opportunity prior to every PDC lesson, to discuss the content further if necessary, for further advice and support. The curriculum materials and activities are designed to help students to think enquiringly and independently whilst also developing their ability to articulate ideas sensitively, confidently and thoughtfully. The curriculum is delivered in an atmosphere of respect, understanding and tolerance and the course content helps students to listen to, evaluate and respond considerately, to the opinions of others. Form tutors facilitate lessons so that class discussion is a frequent and positive activity, with all students encouraged to share their views and to question one another as part of the learning and development process.
